HORNBACH expands into Serbia Bornheim (Palatinate), November 3, 2025. HORNBACH Baumarkt AG is preparing to open DIY stores and garden centres in Serbia over the coming years. Subsidiary companies have already been established to prepare for market entry. The project’s main priorities are selecting and developing first-class sites and securing new regional suppliers. Erich Harsch, Chief Executive Officer of HORNBACH Baumarkt AG, explains: 'Millions of customers in nine European countries value our expertise as the number one project store. We want to continue growing organically so that we can convince even more people of our product range and our consulting expertise in the future. We see great potential for this in Serbia, a country in the heart of Europe with a long, eventful history and an extremely rich culture.' Jan Hornbach, Member of the Management Board of HORNBACH Baumarkt AG, adds: ‘In 2007, we opened our first store in Romania, Serbia's neighbouring country. Today, we operate eleven highly successful HORNBACH DIY stores and garden centres there. We hope to repeat this success story in Serbia.’ The overall project is currently in the planning stage. It is not yet possible to make binding statements regarding the timetable for opening the first stores. 'We are well on track with the overall project. Market entry in Serbia will mark another historic milestone in the successful development of our company,’ says Board Member Jan Hornbach.
HORNBACH is an independent, family-run, publicly listed retail company. Sales of more than 6 billion euros across Europe make the HORNBACH group one of the five largest home improvement and garden retailers in Europe. Founded in 1877, HORNBACH is the only company in the home improvement industry with a history spanning six generations. The group currently operates 173 DIY stores and garden centres, three specialist BODENHAUS outlets, and online shops in nine European countries. The sales concept and product range are particularly geared to the needs of project customers and professionals. HORNBACH guarantees its customers permanently low prices, making it the price leader in the industry. The company’s high quality of advice and excellent service have been recognised in numerous independent tests and studies. With pioneering achievements such as the first combined home and garden centre (1968), the first megastore (1980), and the first home centre with a drive-in facility (2003), HORNBACH is continually at the forefront of innovation. For decades, HORNBACH has been regarded as a job creator, with more than 25,000 employees now contributing to the company’s success. Christian Grether
